Acid Rain Production presents, Lydia Moyer / Civil War Memories (Inside/Out). Civil War Memories (Inside/Out) was created in response to composer Judith Shatin's piece of the same name. Shatin's work, originally commissioned by a dance company for performance, is based on fragments of letters from soldiers during the U.S. Civil War (1861-65). Moyer's video takes the piece through a transposition from past to present. An experimental variation on the documentary style which makes use of primary sourcs and archival photographs, images from the U.S. Civil War, some of the first photographs of their kind ever made, give way to mass media images from the current occumpation of Iraq. The pictures are primarily images of soldiers or prisoners of war and meant to elicit identification with those who enlist in the horror of all wars on all sides, regardless of politics. (9 min 40 sec, digital video, black and white) Lydia Moyer is an experimental filmmaker whose work engages the poetics of nonfiction. She earned her MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill, in 2005. Currently, she runs the new media program in the art department at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
