PRESS RELEASE / JUNE 2010

Guthrie Lonergan / Floor Warp / This episode curated by Jesse Hulcher

Floor Warp is a re-interpretation of the classic "Warp" screen saver, itself a digital re-incarnation of a Sci-Fi cliche. Instead of whizzing through the
bottomless expanse of stars and space, the flat surface of the monitor is filled with an ordinary but infinite wood floor. The world inside of the
Internet and "behind" the screen -- often visualized as outer space -- returns to the banality of inner space. That familiar Star Wars opening
text crawl effect comes back inside to creep along the floors of our bedrooms..

Guthrie Lonergan is an artist/Internet surfer living and working in Los Angeles. His work confronts the new kind of home-made popular culture
emerging on the Internet -- mainstream DIY -- finding something simultaneously life-affirming and disturbing about this infinite collection of the most
mundane moments in peoples' lives. Lonergan's work often focuses on the defaults of consumer-level technology, and how these establish a
foundation of banality for homemade content. Using these presets in iPhoto slideshows or YouTube videos, Lonergan approaches the Internet from
the most basic user's perspective. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the New Museum in New York and in
the first Internet Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and has been written about in Artforum and the Wall Street Journal. He is a co-founder of Nasty Nets
Internet surfing club. All of his work can be seen on his website, TheAgeOfMammals.com.

Curator Statement:
Through works of video, HTML, text and sound, Guthrie Lonergan takes amateur creativity to a professional level. Overdubbed audio, Photoshop-
nightmares and free stock photographs are staples in his bored-at-work art practice. Humorous and subtly dark, his work often focuses on the
intersection of consumer technology and consumer creativity.

With its indefinite duration, Guthrie's 'Floor Warp' is perfect for Acid Rain Production as it references the format of the series while contrasting against
the general conventions of television. Without a start or finish the piece endlessly recycles miles and miles of hardwood flooring, seamlessly looping
as it slides toward you. As you stare into this infinite expanse of Home Depot flooring it becomes difficult to think of anything else. By pushing the
boring to an extreme, 'Floor Warp' comes full circle becoming the most interesting and off-putting programming available on television. It's a lot like
watching the preview channel, but more meditative.
